This port has gained importance over the past years, not only as a port of call for cruises doing western mediterranean, but as a starting point for low cost companies like Thomson, and also for important companies like RCCL or MSC Cruises with their less modern ships such as the Grandeur of the Seas and MSC Lirica. This port of call never attracted me, but after visiting Palma I must admit that it is one of the top ports for western mediterranean itineraries with Barcelona, Rome and Tunisia.
MSC SPLENDIDA AND COSTA SERENA IN PALMA
The cruise ship docks far away from the city center (Cathedral area), but you can take the shuttle service ($). The shuttle bus leaves you near the Cathedral and next to an information office.
You can also take the bus (line 3 for 1.25 €) from Joan Miró 145 to the of Rey Juan Carlos square (and back from almost the same point)
ALTERNATIVES: The city center is full of shops. I recommend to walk around the grid between the Marina, Rey Juan Carlos square, Plaza Mayor and Plaza de Sant Francesc. You can also take the tourist bus which stops at the castle of Bellver. There's a bus stop near the exit of the cruise terminal which is usually full when there are many cruise ships in Palma. But the frequency between the buses is very good (every 20 minutes) so you will not have to wait long.
WHERE TO EAT: The city center is full of small bars and restaurants where you can eat or drink whatever you want
SHOPPING: You can find lots of shops in the city center where you can buy Sobrasada or an Ensaimada which are tipical products of Palma. In the terminal you can find a small duty free shop but with almost nothing interesting to buy
We were in mallorca with the cruise last week and we did a free walking tour with a local guide for the old city center. It was very well. the web is www.mallorcafreetour.com
