Malta (Valletta)

The entrance to the port of Valletta is one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean, so don’t miss it anyway. The port well prepared for cruisers and is next to the city, so you don’t have to pay shuttle services or taxis to get to the city centre. The only difficulty is an acclivity of about 600 meters long between the port and the Triton Fountain. If you don’t want to want there are taxis at the port which offer to take you to the center for 10 €).

The port is well organized and Valletta is oriented and accustomed to the arrival of cruise ships. At the exit we will find taxis, electric cars and a number of mini-shops offering tours and of course the tourist bus. There are also many large stores with magazines, newspapers, souvenirs, bars and restaurants with good products and prices

Malta was under the control of the United Kingdom until the 80s, a fact that can be seen in the naming of streets or their driving (on the left). The local currency is €. To me, Valletta is quite cheap compared to other tourist destinations in the Mediterranean.

OFFICIAL TOURS. There are few options in this destination like panoramic city views, jeep tours or swimming with dolphins in the Mediterranean Marine Park (quite expensive)

ALTERNATIVES:

1.Tour around the island. You’ll find many taxi drivers at the port offering complete tours of the island for about 80-100 € per taxi (negotiate price)
2.Tour of Valletta. There are also Electric Taxis offering a tour of Valletta (negotiate price)
3.Horse carriage. They offer a tour of the city center (60 € an hour)
4.Tourist bus. There are two companies operating in Malta (one is City Sightseeing). The do not include Valletta (be careful they drive very fast)
5.Walking tour. The two main streets are St. Paul's Street and Republic Street. It is best to take the second and return through the first (passing by the Cathedral). I do not recommend to go to Fort St. Elmo (it’s a waste of time).

WHERE TO EAT: There is a terrace-restaurant /ice cream shop in Republic Street near St. George Square called Cafe Cordina which is very good. It has a good variety at a good price, a terrace where you can sit and toilets are clean. It's always busy, but is a big place. If you go with children you’ll find a McDonalds and a Burger King near Triton in Republic Street.

SHOPPING: In the two main streets there are many souvenir shops, jewelry stores ... Typicall to Malta are the figures of the Knights of the Order of Malta
